AB  - After the early death of the architect Prof. Jan Kotěra in 1923, the architectural community perceived the construction of university buildings designed by him on the bridgehead of Čech Bridge in Prague Old Town as a kind of monument, partly also due to a numerous complications that Kotěra had to go through during the long design process. When the Ministry of Public Works commissioned the architect Ladislav Machoň to carry out the construction, the difficulties continued: the project documentation, which he had to perform as much as possible, was not complete; he was under the responsibility of three ministries, which tried to create representative buildings of the new state and significantly save the cost at the same time, and he faced pressure from the law faculty itself. Machoň took on a complicated and responsible task: to carry out the inherited work as accurately as possible, while at the same time putting back his own architectural feelings.
