This hitherto neglected and not very well-known history gives an instructive evidence of the period perception of these sculptural monuments and the practical care given to them. The text puts emphasis on publishing archival documents. Attention is paid mainly to the material additions to the column in 1772 and major renovations in 1869, 1897, 1910, 1923-1924 and 1945-1946. ER
